Town of Webster giveaway free CFL at Webster Village Days

Webster Town Hall

The Town of Webster handed out 660 free Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs at the Webster Village Days on Saturday, August 14. This is the second CFL Giveaway event the Town has held to promote the use of energy efficient lighting technologies within the community of Webster.

Each CFL bulb provides the equivalent brightness of an old style 60-Watt incandescent light bulb while using 75 percent less electricity and lasts many times longer!

The goal of this program is to encourage the replacement of incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient CFL bulbs.

The CFL bulbs were purchased using a portion of the town’s allocated Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades

The town of Webster, after conducting an extensive analysis of the plant's effluent flow, replaced the existing 40 horsepower effluent water pumps with a new, more efficient and smaller 20 horsepower pump. The reduction in horsepower and the enhanced efficiency of the new pump saved 81,767 kWh of electricity per year. The savings also lowered the plant's utility expense by more than $5,100.

Additionally, the control of the plant's aeration blower system is automated to better match air flow to waste flow. The result improved the aeration process while reducing electricity consumption by 89,854 kWh per year and lowering utility expense by another $5,000.

The covers of the digesters at the plant were deteriorating and had developed leaks. In 2009, two new fiberglass covers were installed on the 25 and 35 foot digesters. The new covers allow the plant to collect all the methane gas generated in the digesters. The recovered gas will be used to heat the plant building and the digesters, which will reduce natural gas consumption and associated utility costs.
